Cocoon Resources successful in winning Qualifying Therapeutic Discovery Project grant for Volatile Analysis Corporations’ sorptive nasal stent technology

HUNTSVILLE, Alabama - November 5, 2010 — Cocoon Resources, Inc., a venture group focused in biotech, pharma, and energy, announced today that it was successful in gaining a grant for Volatile Analysis Corp., currently an incubator resident. Volatile Analysis was awarded $206,000.00 by the United States government (IRS, HHS, NIH) under the Qualifying Therapeutic Discovery Project (QTDP) program. Grants were awarded based on project merit to create and sustain high-quality, high-paying U.S. jobs that advance U.S. competitiveness in life, biological and medical sciences. The grant acknowledges Volatile Analysis’ work with patent pending sorptive nasal stent technology in disease and chemical detection.

The grant will aid in further development of a device that facilitates biomarker detection indicative of disease states. The patent pending sorptive nasal stent extracts trace levels of volatile and semi-volatile metabolites produced in the body that are indicative of disease states with potential for early detection of cancer and infectious diseases. Primary inventor Dr. Russell Bazemore said “Volatile Analysis’ sorptive nasal stent will work with standard gas chromatography thereby making the field of breath metabolomics available to a greater number of researchers. This will also enable a greater number of therapies to be screened.”

"This grant will bring a much faster track for the development of Volatile Analysis’ patent pending breath metabolomics technologies for disease and chemical detection," said Katherine Malmay-Bazemore, Cocoon Resources CEO, and Co-founder of Volatile Analysis. “We are extremely pleased to be awarded this grant because it acknowledges Volatile Analysis’ breath metabolomics expertise and technology.”
